Robert F. Brogan, CELA, President

Robert F. (Bob) Brogan, CELA, is president of the Brogan Law Group in Brick, New Jersey.

Certified as an Elder Law Attorney by the ABA-accredited National Elder Law Foundation, he originally built a practice focused on elder law but was influenced by his wife’s experiences as a speech pathologist to expand his work to include special needs. “Jen worked for a local Arc chapter and was very involved in early intervention for kids with serious physical disabilities. I was impressed by the difference she made in people’s lives and wanted to incorporate that into our practice. For more than two decades now, we’ve been able to do that.”

He has held several national positions, including serving on the Board of Directors for NAELA (National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys). He is co-chair of the steering committee for NAELA’s Council of Advanced Practitioners (CAP), an invitation-only organization of innovative leaders in elder and special needs law. He is also a member of the steering committee for the NAELA Tax Section. He was president of NJ-NAELA and a past chair of the Elder and Disability Law Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association.

His interest in public policy dates back to college, when he was a congressional aide and an Eagleton Institute of Politics Undergraduate Associate while attending Rutgers University. He is a nationally respected authority and lecturer on elder law, special needs planning, Medicaid, and the taxation of trusts. He served several years as a co-chair of the SNA’s Public Policy Committee. He has lobbied for positive change at the state and federal levels and has twice received the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Legislative Service Award.

Bob has been selected by his peers for inclusion in Super Lawyers Magazine each year since 2008, is A-V Rated by Martindale-Hubbell, and taught a law and aging course at the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. He earned a B.A. in journalism/mass media and political science from Rutgers University, a J.D. from Rutgers Law School-Camden, and an LL.M. in taxation at Villanova’s Charles Widger School of Law.

He has a variety of interests, including: music (especially U2), playing drums (for close to five decades now), the ocean (grew up surfing at the Jersey Shore), rooting for his beloved but oft-depressing New York Giants, visiting with his wife and kids their family holiday home in Kinard West just outside of Dingle, Ireland (with its beautiful views of Dingle Bay and the amazing West of Ireland countryside); and, most recently, learning Irish.

Bob attributes all his success to his wonderful wife, Jen, whom he has been dating for almost four decades, and the love of their eight kids, one of whom is a type-1 diabetic and another of whom is on the autism spectrum.
